Building a startup is hard, and having the right tools to track and analyze growth is crucial. That’s why Amplitude offers a Scholarship plan, providing startups with free access to Amplitude for a year. This initiative helps early-stage companies gain insights into user behavior, refine their products, and scale efficiently—without the burden of upfront costs. Amplitude empowers founders to make data-driven decisions that drive real growth by equipping startups with world-class analytics.

Today, we explore the story of one such recipient of the Amplitude Scholarship plan—one whose inspirational journey hurdled several startup challenges. This piece in our startup series is told by Jeremy Toeman, founder of AI-assisted video-editing platform Augie.

The problem: A creativity bottleneck

I’ve always believed that AI should do more than automate tasks—it should amplify human creativity. But as I looked around at the tools available, I saw a gap. Most AI video tools felt generic (to say nothing about AI writing tools), lacking the depth and nuance real marketers need. Instead of enhancing creativity, they often flattened it.

And for years, we’ve seen a trend of people scrolling past copy and stopping on video. That’s long been a challenge for content marketers, whether they’re part of a large organization, a startup, or entrepreneurs.

A huge part of this challenge is how fast social media moves. Brands are expected to create engaging content daily, but the process is often slow, expensive, and inconsistent. Many teams still rely on traditional video workflows, which aren’t built for the speed of digital content. Meanwhile, AI video-editing tools exist, but their content lacks the customization and creativity to make it stand out.

And that’s only the tip of the iceberg:

  • Content demands are overwhelming. Every platform requires fresh, engaging video, but creating high-quality content at scale exhausts time, money, and resources.
  • AI tools aren’t built for storytelling. Many platforms generate generic, templated videos that don’t capture a brand’s essence or unique voice.
  • Time and budget constraints limit creative freedom. Teams either spend too much time editing or too much money outsourcing production.

That’s why we did what startups do—create a solution to a problem. For us, that solution was Augie, a video editing tool for a modern workforce. It would use AI to help content teams, social media managers, and influencers move faster without sacrificing quality, brand voice, or strategic alignment.

The solution: Augmenting (not replacing) creativity

Startups thrive when they can move fast without compromising quality. The best solutions remove bottlenecks, make things more efficient, and empower people to focus on what they do best. That’s exactly what we set out to achieve with Augie.

Our mission wasn’t just to automate video creation—it was to empower marketers with AI that enhances their creative process without sacrificing authenticity.

We built Augie with these goals in mind:

  • Turn ideas into scripts. Upload meeting notes, transcripts, or voice recordings—Augie cleans and structures them into a concise, engaging script.
  • Augment and personalize. Add your own visuals or let Augie suggest on-brand images and video clips. Record in your voice or use AI-generated narration.
  • Enhance and refine. Augie fills in gaps with stock images, transitions, and polished edits to deliver a professional final product.

Insights from a strong data analytics platform like Amplitude will drive the future of video. Many influencers take down their videos if they aren’t seeing high engagement. Augie’s platform enables easy variations of the same video—and Amplitude can A/B test those variations to see what’s resonating with your audience.

Of course, understanding the problem and creating the solution is only the first half of the “how.” As a high-reaching startup, our next step was to find our market.

The market: The exploding demand for video content

The demand for video is undeniable: Every minute, 500 hours of content are uploaded to YouTube. Across social platforms, users consistently scroll past text but stop for video. Nearly all brands—whether large corporations or solo enterprises—need video to stay relevant. But traditional production methods simply can’t keep up with the speed of digital content.

To meet that need, we targeted the fast-growing market of content creators and marketing teams that needed to produce videos without hiring expensive production teams. But we needed to stand out—rather than just offering another AI tool, we positioned Augie as something that could help them scale their video strategy with creativity at the core.

The rapid growth of the video market created a clear opportunity—but turning that opportunity into a successful business required more than just a great idea. It meant building the right network, finding the right backing, and refining our approach.

The traction: From idea to validation

Fundraising for Augie wasn’t about securing capital but finding the right partners who understood our mission. We needed investors who recognized the challenges of content creation and saw the potential in our approach. That shaped how we built momentum:

  • Network-first approach: Our early backers truly understood our vision and believed in Augie’s role in the evolving marketing landscape.
  • Iterative pitching: Every investor conversation refined our messaging, helping us identify what resonated most.
  • Transparency: We prioritized open conversations about our wins, challenges, and long-term goals—because trust is the foundation of strong investor relationships.

These efforts paid off, helping us put a product in the hands of people who need it most. And speaking of people, every startup must have the right team members on board.

The team: The people behind Augie

No startup succeeds without the right team. At Augie, we assembled a group of passionate creators, engineers, and marketing experts who, in addition to their talent, shared in our core belief: AI should amplify creativity, not replace it.

Our team understood the real-world challenges of video marketing because we had experienced them first-hand. We’ve built Augie with direct input from content professionals, ensuring that every feature is designed to make their work easier, not replace their creative instincts.

See what Augie can do for you

AI should continue to amplify creativity, not replace it. At Augie, we’re building a future where anyone—whether a solo creator or a global brand—can easily produce high-quality video. If you’re ready to create smarter, faster, and better video content, we’d love for you to join us.

Try Augie for free today and see the difference for yourself.
